REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PRIESTHOOD

Juan Diego House

Non-profit House of Formation for college seminarians aspiring to the priesthood

The community of Juan Diego House is comprised of students who have qualified as seminarians for the Roman Catholic Priesthood of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

With its multicultural reality, Juan Diego House seeks to create a rich academic, spiritual, catechetical, and liturgical environment for men seeking a life in the vocations. Seminarians are indoctrinated and given the opportunity for personal human growth, authentic Christian service to others, and a deepening appreciation of the spiritual and liturgical life of the Church.

The program of formation aims to develop:

  • Christ-centered men committed to the Church, her liturgical life and social teachings, and to personal prayer;
  • Men with knowledge of the Catholic faith, open to others’ needs, cultures, and personalities;
  • A spirit of generous service and the ability to work collaboratively for the common good.
Upon leaving JDH, the seminarian will know himself better, have a deeper understanding of what it means to be a priest, and be committed to serving God and neighbor.

Academics

The community of Juan Diego House recognizes that as part of their personal responses to the call of the Lord to seek his will, they are committing themselves to be well-educated men. As a result, the commitment to academic studies, diligent learning and excellence in education is a high priority. All efforts will be made as a community to foster an academic environment in which each member can excel in the schools and colleges at which they are attending. An environment conducive to study is maintained at all times, specifically during those times determined by the community to be optimum times for study.

Education and learning has an integral role in the formation of a seminarian as part of Juan Diego House. The academic plan of each candidate will be based on his specific academic needs. This plan will be determined by the Office for Vocations and the student as he works to eventually meet the requirements for admission to St. John's Seminary

Overview Pre-Theology Program for Philosophy Students

College students sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles at Juan Diego House are expected to complete most of the 30-unit Program of Priestly Formation philosophy requirement at the California State University, Dominguez Hills.

In addition to that requirement, the Program of Priestly Formation also requires 12 units of undergraduate theology. This will be accomplished as pre-theologians by JDH students so that they can complete the current Program for Priestly Formation (PPF) requirement in 18 additional semester hours of instruction (spread out over a two-year period) at St. John's Seminary, in addition to their bachelor's degree from CSUDH.

The community of Juan Diego House is comprised of students who have qualified as seminarians for the Roman Catholic Priesthood of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Designated as seminarians, these students form a collaborative community, and live an intentional rule of life that is in conformity with Gospel values, promoting and maintaining a life style that will assist the seminarian in his growth towards personal freedom and responsibility in service to God, Church, and neighbor. This program also encourages each member of the community to accept, encourage and appreciate his own gifts and the gifts of his brothers. Incorporated into the rule of life, are the norms indicated in the Fifth Edition of the Program for Priestly Formation of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
