Discernment

Role of the Church in Discernment

The discernment process in the priesthood and religious life must include the Church. One may feel strongly called to the priestly or religious life, but the decision is ultimately left to the bishop or religious superior. While you are discerning God’s call (both before and during the seminary), the Church is also discerning alongside you to determine if you have the necessary skills to be an effective priest. A valid candidate for the sacrament of Holy Orders needs to demonstrate more than just the desire to be a priest. He must demonstrate the ability to gain the skills, to achieve academically, and to grow in pastoral care of others. In short, he must be a man who shows the desire and ability to love God and love the Church as an ordained servant of both.
